Penile Implant Surgery

Penile Implant Surgery is a procedure that helps men with erectile dysfunction by placing a prosthetic device inside the penis and scrotum. This procedure is considered when all the other available treatment options are ineffective and could not resolve the condition. This procedure helps the man achieve an erection and regain sexual function.

There are two types of penile implants, inflatable, and semi-rigid. The type that is used will depend on the needs and preferences of the man. Several factors like age, penis size, previous health history, and overall health are considered before deciding which type of implant is suitable. The simplest kind of prosthesis comprises a pair of bendable rods that are surgically inserted within the erection chambers of the penis. Penile implants can also be used to treat severe cases of a condition that causes scarring inside the penis, leading to curved, painful erections. In most cases, doctors try simpler and less invasive treatments first. If these treatments are not successful, men with ED may consider penile implant surgery.

Who requires penile implant surgery?

  • Individuals with constant Erectile Dysfunction which hampers the sex life
  • Unsuccessful and ineffective results from initial treatments
  • Individuals who have experienced unsatisfactory results using a penile pump

 Surgical procedure:

  • Local anaesthesia is given to the patient to make the surgery pain free.
  • The surgeon cuts the penis below the head and places the implant inside.
  • If an inflatable implant is used, the surgeon makes a few cuts in the scrotum to place the pump and the valve.
  • If a three-piece system is used, the surgeon makes incisions in the abdomen and place the fluid container inside.

Benefits of penile implant surgery:

  • Quick recovery.
  • Feels natural.
  • Can bring back normal sexual life.
  • The surgery is a daycare procedure that takes around 60 minutes
  • It does not affect a man's orgasm, sensation, ejaculation, or urination.

Penile implants can help men to get an erection but can't increase sexual desire or sensation. The implants used must be smaller than the size of the actual penis. They even cannot help to increase the size of the penis.
