Benign Prostate Enlargement – Causes & Symptoms

Date :12-Mar-2020

Benign prostate enlargement is a common condition that affects men as they grow old. It is a condition where the prostate gland that is located beneath the bladder gets multiplied and enlarged. It, in turn, affects or blocks the urine flow from the urethra. Many assume and misunderstand prostate enlargement with prostate cancer, which is not true. Even there is no proven fact that people with prostate enlargement are at higher risk of developing cancer.

The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. Often they are mild at first and increase if proper treatment is not provided. The symptoms include:

  • Difficulty in urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Painful urination
  • Dribbling at the end of urinary stream
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Increased frequency of urination at night
  • Urine leakage
  • Blood in the urine

Over a period, if the condition is not treated, the inability to urinate can also lead to other problems like bladder stones, infection, and in worst cases, kidney damage.

The exact cause of the condition is not known. But prostate enlargement can be caused due to ageing and changes in the sex hormones.

Men produce higher amounts of testosterone hormone and a small amount of estrogen. As they age, the testosterone levels decrease in the blood, leaving higher levels of estrogen. The hormone estrogen might act as a triggering factor for the prostate cells to multiply and enlarge.

The other factors that can increase the risk of prostate enlargement apart from aging include:

  • Family History – Having a blood relation with the condition increases the risk of developing it.
  • Lifestyle – Obesity increase the risk of prostate enlargement. The condition can be controlled well with regular exercise and a healthy diet.
  • Diabetes & Heart Problem – The use of beta-blockers might increase risk levels.
  • Erectile Dysfunction

Early diagnosis and treatment for prostate enlargement will help decrease the severity of the symptoms and control further damage.
